Rumeli Hisarı is defined by the fortress Mehmed II built in just four months in 1452 to cut Byzantine supply lines before the conquest of Constantinople. The three massive towers and connecting walls now host summer open-air concerts, and the surrounding village has kept its low scale of wooden houses climbing the hill toward Boğaziçi University. The narrow shoreline below the walls is one of the best spots in the city to watch tankers squeeze through the Bosphorus's tightest point.
