The Amsterdam School cathedral of social housing
A green park fused with a reused gasworks of restaurants, cinema and galleries.
Westerpark joins a long green park to the Westergasfabriek, a former municipal gasworks whose brick halls now hold restaurants, a cinema, galleries and event spaces without being scrubbed of their industrial character. On weekends the lawns fill with families and the old buildings host markets and festivals. It sits just beyond the canal belt, so it draws a local, creative crowd more than coach tours. The combination of open grass and reused industry makes it one of the easiest places in the city to spend an unplanned afternoon.
