Wieden & Naschmarkt

The Naschmarkt corridor, Vienna's largest open-air market plus Wieden's leafy residential edge

The 4. Bezirk wraps the Naschmarkt, Vienna's largest open-air food market, running half a kilometre along the covered Wienfluss between Karlsplatz and Kettenbrückengasse. Two parallel rows of permanent stands sell fish, cheese, vinegar, Turkish-Levantine spice, Iranian saffron, sourdough, oysters and the lunch-counter Beuschel that no kaffeehaus does properly any more. The market's restaurant row at the eastern end holds Tewa, Neni am Naschmarkt and the natural-wine bar Heunisch & Erben, three of the most reliable lunches in the city. South of the market, Wieden runs leafy and residential up to the Karlskirche; the Phil bookstore-café and the Saint Charles Apothecary keep the neighborhood's quieter character on Wiedner Hauptstraße. The gezgin uses Wieden for the 09:00 Naschmarkt walk and the Heunisch & Erben Saturday lunch.
