Kolonaki

Athens' luxury slope — Voukourestiou shopping, Cookoovaya, café-square politics

Kolonaki is Athens' luxury quarter — the slope of Lykavittos hill above Syntagma, the boutique strip on Voukourestiou and Tsakalof, the embassies along Vasilissis Sofias, and the cluster of cafés around Kolonaki Square where the city's editorial directors, lawyers and gallery owners have been sitting at the same outdoor tables for twenty-five years. The dining register is half international (Travolta hipster-Italian, the hotel grills) and half neo-Greek (Cookoovaya the Bib Gourmand anchor). The gezgin uses Kolonaki for the lunch that happens between a Voukourestiou errand and a 16:00 meeting — not for headline dinners, those happen elsewhere.
