Josefstadt
Classic Viennese 8. — long-running Beisl, Theater in der Josefstadt, Biedermeier streets
The 8. Bezirk is the smallest of Vienna's inner districts and the most quietly continuous — narrow streets, Biedermeier facades, the Josefstädter Straße spine, the Theater in der Josefstadt running its 1788 programme largely unchanged. The Albertina-Modern, the Rathaus and the Burgtheater are all within a ten-minute walk. The hood holds the kind of classic Viennese rooms that the rest of the city has lost: long-running Beisl with the boiled-beef-and-horseradish menu still operating, family-run wine bars, the Strudel-and-Mokka kaffeehaus that has not been refurbished since 1962 and does not need to be. The gezgin uses Josefstadt for the lunch that operates outside the Innere-Stadt postcode premium but at the same standard.
