Galata

Medieval Genoese tower district packed with specialty coffee and independent shops

Galata climbs the hill below its Genoese tower, built in 1348 as the tallest structure in a trading colony ruled from Genoa across the Golden Horn. The stone warehouses and banking halls of the 19th-century Ottoman financial quarter now house third-wave coffee roasters, independent galleries, and small concept shops along Serdar-ı Ekrem and Galip Dede. Despite heavy tourism around the tower, the back lanes remain some of the most atmospheric in Istanbul.
