New 1.2km waterfront promenade built on the historic Karaköy cruise port
Galataport opened in 2021 on the 1.2-kilometre Karaköy waterfront that once served as Istanbul's main passenger port. The underground cruise terminal allowed the entire quayside to remain public, with the restored Paket Postanesi building and the relocated Istanbul Modern museum bookending a promenade of shops, restaurants, and open-air terraces. The development reconnected the historic peninsula view to a stretch of shoreline that had been closed to the public for decades.
