Café de Flore
Saint-Germain & Saint-Sulpice
Sartre and Beauvoir's corner of Boulevard Saint-Germain since 1887.
The other Saint-Germain café, with the better view of the church.
Les Deux Magots opened in 1885 on the corner facing the Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés and has been in conversation with Café de Flore — fifty meters away — ever since. The two share the same clientele, the same waiter uniforms, the same prices. The Deux Magots claims Hemingway, Picasso, Joyce, and the Surrealists; the Prix des Deux Magots, founded 1933, still names a French novel each January. The terrace looks at the oldest church in Paris, which is the deciding vote for many. Order an omelette or the chocolat chaud, which arrives in a porcelain pitcher and is excellent. Open until 1am, jazz on Thursday nights.
