Where to Eat Late in Athens

Mes Prestiges Editorial Team ·

Athens eats late — but not every 'open late' sign means the kitchen is still working. This guide draws that line. We kept only the places where the kitchen genuinely serves food past 23:00, and left out anything that closes by 22:00 or keeps only the bar running. A short, honest list: meze and taverna tables that run to midnight or beyond, chef kitchens that take a late booking, and one after-midnight sweet stop.

Tavernas and mezedopoleia that run to midnight

The real late-night Athens eats at the table — over meze, barrel wine or tsipouro, with time to spare. These four keep the kitchen open to midnight or past it, so a 23:00 table is no race.

  1. Klimataria

    Psyrri · Michelin-listed institutional taverna (since 1927) · $$

Klimataria has served Psyrri since 1927 and runs seven days a week from 12:00 to 02:00 — one of the very few places on this list where the kitchen genuinely holds until two in the morning. It is an institutional taverna with a courtyard garden, barrel retsina and a charcoal grill. Three generations have passed through this kitchen. For a late dinner after midnight, it is the safest bet in the city.

  2. Mavro Provato

    Pangrati · Bib Gourmand mezedopoleio · $$

Mavro Provato in Pangrati is a Bib Gourmand mezedopoleio, open Monday to Saturday from 13:00 to midnight. The kitchen works in small plates with a tsipouro program — the meyhane's cousin. It is a neighbourhood favourite, ideal for a long table that stretches out. Arrive at 23:00 and the kitchen is still going.

It carries a Bib Gourmand, with barrel retsina, paper on the tables and three generations behind the plates. It is an institution — the taverna you go to first in Athens. With a kitchen that holds to midnight, a late table fits easily.

  4. Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani

    Psyrri · Bib Gourmand Anatolian-Greek (Politiki / Karamanlides cuisine) · $$

Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani in Psyrri is both a delicatessen and a restaurant, serving Politiki and Anatolian-Greek cooking — the bridge between Istanbul and Athens. It carries a Bib Gourmand and is open Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to midnight. The culinary memory of the Smyrna refugees lives in these plates. For a late dinner with character, plus things to take home, it works to midnight.

This list is deliberately short. In Athens plenty of places say 'late', but the kitchen closes at 22:00 or only the bar stays open — here we kept only those that genuinely serve food past 23:00. From the meze houses running to midnight to the one-and-two-in-the-morning kitchens of Klimataria and Hervé, and the late sweet in Monastiraki, these are the places that won't leave you hungry. Book where needed and eat at your own pace.
