Klimataria
Plaka
Upper-Plaka taverna since 1927 — courtyard, charcoal grill, the working-Athenian institution above the tourist belt.
Pangrati taverna since 1926 — barrel retsina, paper-tablecloth classics, the institution.
Karavitis has been on Pafsaniou in Pangrati since 1926, three generations of the same family — a taverna in the strict sense, not a restaurant trying to pass: barrel retsina drawn from the wooden cask at the front, paper tablecloths, charcoal-grilled lamb chops, stuffed vine leaves and kontosouvli the kitchen has been making in the same way for a century. The Michelin Guide recognised it in the 2025 Greece cycle with a Bib Gourmand. Regulars use Karavitis for the institutional-Athens dinner — the cousin to the Istanbul meyhane that opened the year after Atatürk founded the Republic — and for the working understanding that the city's mid-century taverna canon is still there if you look past the Plaka tourist-belt for it.
Dinner only — open at 20:00, the room fills by 21:30. Order the lamb chops, the stuffed vine leaves, the barrel retsina by the carafe. Cash only is no longer accurate — cards accepted since 2023.
