Apokoronas & Drakona (Chania)
Green, rural, hearth-cooked Cretan

Apokoronas & Drakona (Chania)

Green stone-village country east of Chania, where wood-fired lamb, village tavernas and Lake Kournas make lunch the main event.

Inland and east of Chania, Apokoronas is a green region of stone villages, olive groves and the freshwater Lake Kournas, where the rhythm is set by the land rather than the sea. This is where you go for the real Cretan table — village tavernas grilling lamb and goat over wood, antikristo, fresh cheeses and herb pies, often with the producer at the next table. Drakona in particular has built a quiet reputation for hearth-cooked meat in unfussy mountain rooms. Come hungry, drive between villages, and treat lunch as the main event.
