Centro Storico

The UNESCO old town where pizza was born and the street is the dining room.

The Centro Storico is the loud, living heart of Naples, a UNESCO-listed grid of decumani where Spaccanapoli cuts a dead-straight line through stacked tenements, shrine-lit alleys, and the constant percussion of scooters. This is pizza's home ground: the queues outside Gino Sorbillo and Di Matteo on Via dei Tribunali are part of the streetscape, and a Margherita here is eaten fast, folded, and standing if need be. Between the pizzerie sit institutions like Scaturchio for sfogliatella on Piazza San Domenico Maggiore and unfussy osterie ladling out genuine cucina napoletana. Nothing about it is curated for visitors; the theatre is real, and you are simply in it.

Da non perdere
