Masséna / Carabacel
Central, polished, on the move

Masséna / Carabacel

The city's central pivot of red arcades, tram and park, edging up into the quieter Belle Époque streets of Carabacel.

This is the city's pivot point: Place Masséna with its red arcades and chequerboard paving, the tram gliding through, and the green spine of the Promenade du Paillon running down to the sea. Carabacel climbs gently behind it into a quieter grid of Belle Époque blocks and a few grand old hotels, where the pace slows and the cafés feel more residential. The strip works for an early-evening drink and people-watching as much as for shopping the avenues that fan out from the square. It is the most central and the most polished part of town, useful as a base even if you eat elsewhere.
