Kruger's American Bar
Innere Stadt
Innere Stadt cocktail room since 1995 — the night-after-the-opera anchor.
Adolf Loos's 1908 marble-and-mahogany cocktail bar — the smallest landmark in the 1.
Adolf Loos designed and built the Kärntner Bar on Kärntner Durchgang in 1908 — twenty-seven square metres, mirrored walls that fake an infinite room, the ceiling coffered in Cipollino marble, the bar fitted in Honduran mahogany. The room is a national monument and operates under the original Loos fit-out unchanged. The cocktail programme leans classical — Martini, Manhattan, Negroni, a serious Sazerac — and the bar takes the form seriously: the bartender measures with a jigger, stirs the Manhattan for exactly fifty turns, walks the drink across the room rather than slide it. For visitors who care about the architectural lineage of the bar form, the Loos is non-negotiable.
Twenty-seven square metres — arrive before 21:00 if you want a seat at the bar. Order a Boulevardier or a Sazerac; the bartender will read the room and adjust. The Loos building behind the bar is the same architect's 1909 commercial building, also worth twenty seconds of attention on the way out.
