Modernist grandeur, orderly grid

Eixample

Cerdà's elegant grid lined with Modernisme landmarks and a steady residential rhythm.

Ildefons Cerdà's nineteenth-century grid gives Eixample its unmistakable rhythm: wide avenues, chamfered corners and long blocks that make the district feel airy and orderly. This is where Modernisme reaches full pitch, from Gaudí's Casa Batlló and La Pedrera along Passeig de Gràcia to the Sagrada Família a few blocks east. Beyond the famous façades it is a working residential quarter, with everyday markets, neighbourhood cafés and the lively bar scene of the so-called Gaixample. The scale is grander than the old town, but the pleasures are still found at street level.
