Loos American Bar

Adolf Loos designed and built the Kärntner Bar on Kärntner Durchgang in 1908 — twenty-seven square metres, mirrored walls that fake an infinite room, the ceiling coffered in Cipollino marble, the bar fitted in Honduran mahogany. The room is a national monument and operates under the original Loos fit-out unchanged. The cocktail programme leans classical — Martini, Manhattan, Negroni, a serious Sazerac — and the bar takes the form seriously: the bartender measures with a jigger, stirs the Manhattan for exactly fifty turns, walks the drink across the room rather than slide it. For visitors who care about the architectural lineage of the bar form, the Loos is non-negotiable.
