Mangal 1 Ocakbaşı
Dalston
The original Ali Dirik ocakbaşı on Arcola Street since 1990 — BYOB, walk-in only, untouched
The Dirik family ocakbaşı since 1994 — the canonical Turkish address the audience takes London-Turks to
Mangal II is the second restaurant the Dirik family opened on Stoke Newington Road in 1994, six years after Ali Dirik founded the original Mangal Ocakbaşı round the corner on Arcola Street. Sons Ferhat and Sertaç ran the kitchen through the 2010s — Sertaç had cheffed at Noma's sister 108 in Copenhagen — and quietly turned the room into something more ambitious than diaspora ocakbaşı: blue-and-white paint, sans-serif logo, sourdough lavash, Aegean wine list. Sertaç stepped back from the day-to-day in 2024; the kitchen is now Ferhat-led. The defining Turkish address in London — the one the audience takes a visiting İstanbullu to without apology.
The set ocakbaşı menu is the order — you do not navigate the à la carte at Mangal II, you eat what comes off the grill. The wine list leans Aegean and is more thoughtful than any other Turkish room in London. The bay's reader books here when they want to prove London Turkish food competes with the homeland — it does.
