Wine Country (Heraklion)

South of the city, the rolling hills around Archanes, Peza and Dafnes form the most serious wine country on Crete, planted with native varieties like Vidiano, Vilana, Kotsifali and Mandilari. Established estates and a new wave of small producers run tasting rooms among the vines, and a day here pairs cellar visits with long village lunches. Archanes itself is a handsomely restored market town that makes a natural base, with good tavernas and squares for a slow afternoon. This is the part of Heraklion to drive into for terroir and table rather than monuments.
