Mandarin Oriental, Munich
Altstadt-Lehel
73 rooms behind a neo-Renaissance facade in the Altstadt
Bog oak, Jura stone, and a wine bar in the Altstadt
Munich's quietest design hotel — 73 rooms on Ledererstraße in materials chosen for restraint rather than statement: bog-oak floors, Jura natural-stone bathrooms, burnished brass, kilim carpets. Owner Rudi Kull built much of the furniture in-house. Grapes, the ground-floor wine bar, has won an international wine-bar prize and is a destination in its own right. Five minutes from Marienplatz, six from the Viktualienmarkt — the location is exactly the same as the more flashy Beyond by Geisel, but the experience is the opposite of theatre.
Breakfast pulls direct from the Viktualienmarkt around the corner, including same-morning Weisswurst. Grapes wine bar takes outside reservations — book separately even if you are not staying.
