Berlin's classic political power-lunch — Wiener Schnitzel since 1893.
Gendarmenmarkt's 1811 Sekt-and-Wiener-Schnitzel institution — Charlottenstraße.
Lutter & Wegner on Charlottenstraße at the Gendarmenmarkt corner is the wine merchant August Friedrich Lutter and Christian Wegner opened in 1811 — the German word Sekt for sparkling wine reportedly originated in this room (the legend has the actor Ludwig Devrient ordering 'Sekt' from a line of Falstaff). The current restaurant runs as a classic Berlin Wirtshaus-meets-brasserie with the Wiener Schnitzel as the marker order, an Austrian-German menu of consistent classics, and one of the older wine cellars in central Berlin. The location at Gendarmenmarkt is the second part of the booking — the square itself is one of the most ornamental in the city.
Order the Wiener Schnitzel and a Riesling. The terrace on the Gendarmenmarkt is the summer move; the back wood-panelled room is the winter one. Book one week ahead.
