Where to Eat in Rome?

Rome eats by tradition first and ambition second. The canon is cucina romana: cacio e pepe, coda alla vaccinara, the quinto quarto offal that the Testaccio slaughterhouse left behind. The fine-dining tier exists and is taken seriously, but it sits on top of a city that still measures a kitchen by its rigatoni, not its plating. Read Rome by rione and the map resolves quickly.

Testaccio is the spiritual home of the offal-and-pasta canon, anchored by Checchino dal 1887 across from the old Mattatoio, plus Felice a Testaccio, Trattoria Perilli and the streetfood counters of Trapizzino and Mordi e Vai. Prati, the orderly Vatican-side grid, carries the modern register: the bistrot L'Arcangelo, the all-day Il Sorpasso, and the city's most pedigreed pizza al taglio at Pizzarium Bonci. Aventino and Prati also hold the headline fine-dining rooms, while Pigneto and San Lorenzo run the younger, more experimental end.

Tradition and the Starred Tier

The everyday Roman trattoria is honest and cash-forward; a plate of pasta and a quartino of house white still runs modestly. The ambitious end is real: Marco Martini on Viale Aventino and Pulejo in Prati both hold a Michelin star, reworking Roman classics through modern technique at tasting-menu prices. Checchino dal 1887, six generations deep, remains the reference point for the quinto-quarto repertoire.

Reservation Tips

The starred rooms want a week or two of notice, especially for a weekend table. The classic Testaccio trattorias are busiest at Sunday lunch, the most Roman meal of the week, so book ahead or arrive early. August empties the city and many family-run places close for ferie; spring and autumn are the comfortable windows.
