Weinhaus Neuner
Altstadt-Lehel
Munich's oldest wine house, restored 15th-century vaulted rooms
800-label cellar at Hotel Excelsior, head chef Benedikt Arps
The Geisel family's wine bar at Hotel Excelsior between Stachus and Hauptbahnhof — an 800-label list dominated by German, French and Austrian wines, with the largest by-the-glass programme in central Munich. Since June 2024 the kitchen has been run by head chef Benedikt Arps, who reads regional Bavarian and Mediterranean cooking through a wine-pairing lens — every plate is built to make a specific style of wine sing. The room is a serious German wine restaurant in posture, with a clubby front-of-house that knows the list cold. The right address when you want a proper wine dinner without the formality of a Michelin tasting menu.
Ask for the wine pairing — the kitchen is built for it. Strong on Pfalz, Rheingau and Wachau Riesling; the Burgundy section is short but well chosen.
