Maxvorstadt
Munich's largest schnitzel — the Maxvorstadt classic since 1995
Beechwood-grilled Nürnberger sausages on a tin plate, off the market
Tucked into Dreifaltigkeitsplatz behind the Viktualienmarkt, the Bratwurstherzl runs an open beechwood grill in the front room and serves the Nürnberger Würstl six or twelve at a time on a tin plate, with sauerkraut or potato salad. The dining room is small, pine-clad, the walls hung with antlers — the format is older than tourism. Brought-in Nürnbergers (the protected sausage from Nürnberg arrives daily) are the move; the Tellerfleisch and the Leberkäse round out the short menu.
Small, popular with locals — expect a wait at peak. The chapter's recommendation for the proper Bratwurst experience without a tourist menu in seven languages.
