Kule Rock City
Bodrum
The Barlar Sokağı rock bar that has held the same stage and the same rotating live band line-up since 2006
The 1983 stone-house jazz bar where Yeni Türkü and Erkan Oğur played before anyone had heard of them
Haluk and Faruk Şen opened Mavi in a 120-year-old Bodrum stone house in 1983, a decade before the town became what it is now. The bougainvillea has grown over the courtyard, the live music continues seven nights a week, and the bar is now run by Vedat Sakman. The line-up reads as a history of Turkish music: Yeni Türkü, Grup Gündoğarken, Fikret Kızılok, Erkan Oğur all worked the small stage early. It is the rare bar street venue that survives because of the music, not the spotlight outside.
Music starts at 23:00; arrive at 22:30 to claim a table in the courtyard. Order the Mustafa's Mood at the bar — the bartender chooses the spec to fit the night.
